How Do You Prepare for a Large Interior Painting Project?

How Do You Prepare for a Large Interior Painting Project?

Timeline, budget, priorities, a busy life… You’re juggling a lot. So, how do you fit in a large-scale repaint?

Hey, we may be painters but we’re also homeowners with families, kids, in-laws, and calendars that fill up just a little too fast sometimes. It’s one thing if you’re fitting in a quick repaint of a room or two, but we know that a large-scale interior repaint can quickly feel overwhelming.

We sat down with Chris, one of our awesome estimators, just to get his take on the best approach; one that lets you love the process and not just the results.

7 tips for taking the stress out of interior painting

#1: Make a list of top priorities

We’d love to check every box on your wishlist, but just in case it’s not feasible because of budget constraints, schedule, or the impact on family life, we always recommend having a priority list. Maybe we can do everything, or maybe we start with the must-haves.

#2: Make a list of questions for your interior painter

It’s good to have questions in-hand and ready to go when your estimator arrives. This is especially true for any areas of your home that may need repair or extra attention.

#3: Come armed with paint colors and info

If you’d like to refresh existing colors, it’s extremely helpful to know what colors were used, brand/grade, and sheen too. Just another way to remove any speed bumps that slow down the paint selection and application process.

#4: Remember that a great interior paint job takes time

Is interior painting faster than a remodel? Absolutely. But it still takes time - often a week or more for a larger-scale interior repaint.

#5: Talk with your interior painter about what to expect

Every step can be taken to contain the work areas, prep the space, mask, and protect surfaces, but it’s still a big job. Your home will be a work zone, and there will likely be some residual dust in the air from drywall repairs. Chris’ best recommendation is to talk in-depth with your painter about what to expect and what your busy household can accommodate. Maybe you knock out the project in one fell swoop, or maybe it makes more sense to tackle it in sections so that there’s less overall impact.

#6: Don’t let the process scare you

Things will get worse before they get better. When you see the masking, primer, spackled walls, and a general work-in-progress all around you, it can be easy to feel a little overwhelmed and spooked. Take a deep breath and trust the process. It’s not like the HGTV commercials where the homeowner snaps their fingers, the project is done, and they fall onto their couch for a relaxing evening with a satisfied smile. Painting the right way is a serious undertaking but we PROMISE it will be worth the journey.

#7: Find a painting contractor you can trust

Do your homework, do your research, and work with a painting contractor you feel comfortable with. It might cost more, but when you’re in the thick of it you’ll be so happy and relieved to have a friendly, communicative professional in your corner. It’s a team effort, and you deserve a partner who has your back every step of the way.

Okay, see if this sounds familiar. You’ve done your homework and know you want to paint your kitchen cabinets . After all, they’re in decent shape, good quality, and the layout works for you. They’re just definitely in need of some TLC, and you want to give them a more modern look. Now for the big question: what color should you choose for your cabinets? Let’s run through a few tips and considerations together, and then we’ll show you a cabinet painting project in Frankfort that we just finished. Pick the Right White for Your Cabinetry White is a go-to option, and has been for decades. Kind of like subway tile, white cabinets just never go out of style, and they offer a crisp, fresh look that’s perfect for today’s kitchen. Just remember: under the “white paint” category live a WHOLE lot of options. We’re seeing homeowners choose warmer shades in a lot of cases, often with a bit of beige or greige. Add An Accent Color To Your Kitchen White cabinets pair beautifully with an accent color. It could be a wall, or it could be your kitchen island. No island? How about a darker color for your lower cabinets, with white uppers? Super stylish with the added benefit of creating the feeling of height and space. Think Through Your Preferences and Goals Bigger than just a style you like, think through whether you want to create a modern or classic feel? Create light and space, or warmer and cozy? Do you have a lot of natural light or a little? All of these considerations will help you narrow your choices, and will also help your cabinet painter present the best ideas and options possible. Work with a Professional Cabinet Painter You need this project to come out right and to look AMAZING. A professional cabinet painter can help you with the color considerations, but will also make sure that the right steps, prep, and products are used for the best finish quality possible. Our Jondec Painting team is known for house painting, but did you know that we have full commercial painting capabilities too? We love applying our same skills and standards, just on a larger scale. In this case, we had the opportunity to refresh a local Tinley Park school before that bell rang for the first time. After the wild and rocky year our students have had, it felt good to provide them with a warm, colorful welcome. Planning and Prepping Every commercial painting project starts with carefully mapping out the scope and our approach. The schedule is also all-important, especially in a case like this. We’re used to working off-hours and on weekends, as needed, just to make sure that our painting doesn’t interfere with daily operations. After planning the details, we got to work prepping the halls and surfaces. These initial steps lay the groundwork for an efficient painting process.

Thinking about an interior painting project? It's definitely time to consider colors and styles, but you also need to consider paint finishes . Especially if you're covering high-traffic areas, you need a paint job that can stand up to bumps and scrapes, and is easy to touch up down the road (especially if kids or pets are involved!). Today, let's take a look at a few of your traditional paint sheen options and see which is the best fit for your home. Quick Tip! Pick Paint Brands Wisely We love bargains as much as anyone, but please be aware that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to interior paint and paint brands. There is certainly a wide variety of cheap products readily available, but high-quality paint is worth the investment, delivering better color retention, excellent coverage, and a more durable finish. Flat, Gloss, or Satin Paint: How Do You Choose? If we drill down deeper, we find even more options: Flat paint Eggshell finish Satin finish Matte paint Glossy finish Semi-gloss paint Feeling overwhelmed? Don't! We'll share some good news in just a minute. It used to be that the level of shine your paint had was a direct indicator of how durable and washable it was. For example, ceilings were almost always painted with a flat or matte finish since they're low-traffic surfaces (thanks to, well, gravity). Plus, flat finishes cover blemishes well, absorb light, and are easy to touch up. In high-moisture areas, like a bathroom, it was recommended that you choose paint with a glossier finish. The harder surface locked out moisture more effectively, deterring the growth of mold or mildew. Plus it's easy to wipe down. Glossy paints also found a home on trim, chair rail, doors, baseboards, and cabinets. Paint for walls in general spaces, like your living room, more often than not were done in eggshell finishes. Eggshell offers a nice balance of softness and durability. Now for that good news. Flatter Paint Sheens Can Be Durable and Washable Too As the EPA's standards for paint safety changed over the years, paint manufacturers really stepped up their game. If you choose a high-quality paint, today's flat and matte sheens are just as durable and washable as glossier paint. That means you get all the benefits of lower-sheen paints, but with the strength you need for a busy household. Plus, flat and matte paint is super stylish right now. Good news all around! What's the Takeaway? Talk to your local paint expert and ask what brand of paint they recommend, or will be using for your interior paint job. Or, if you're tackling a DIY project, make the investment in a quality paint manufacturer. You'll be so glad you did, enjoying the performance and style for years to come. Have any other questions?
