Paint or stain for a fence? It depends.
For most wood fences, stain is the right answer. It soaks into the wood, protects from the inside, ages gracefully, and shows the grain. When it eventually needs a refresh, you can usually just re-coat without stripping.
Paint has its place too, especially on fences that have been painted before or on white picket and farm-style fences where uniform color is the whole point. It looks crisp on day one, but it's more maintenance long-term: paint sits on top of the wood, and once it starts peeling, you're looking at a real prep job before the next coat.

How often does a wood fence need to be stained?
Most wood fences benefit from a fresh coat every three to five years, depending on the type of wood, the product used, and how much sun and weather it takes. South-facing fences tend to need more frequent attention.
Can you stain or paint a fence that's never been finished?
Absolutely. In fact, it can be the ideal scenario. New or never-finished wood takes stain beautifully and gives you the longest-lasting result. The biggest mistake homeowners make with new fences is waiting too long. Once the wood starts graying and cracking, your options narrow.
What if my fence is in rough shape?
We'll take a look. If the wood is structurally sound and the damage is mostly cosmetic, a thorough cleaning, minor repair, and re-stain can bring it back. If the boards are too far gone, no amount of paint will fix that, and we'll tell you up front rather than take your money for a coat that won't hold.
Do you handle fence repairs as part of the project?
Minor repairs, yes. Loose boards, popped nails, surface fixes, light replacement. For major structural repair or full fence rebuilds, we'll point you toward a fencing contractor we trust. We'd rather refer you out than do work that isn't our specialty.
