What is an AWO, and how can it benefit your house painting project?

During your next repaint, you may run into an opportunity for an “AWO.” What is it, and how could it work to your advantage?

AWO stands for Additional Work Order. It refers to a new project that is added to the work included in your initial estimate.

What are we NOT talking about? We’re definitely not talking about “surprises” from your painter, or an estimate that suddenly doesn’t include what you thought it did. That’s not how we work at Jondec Painting, and not how any reputable, honest painting company should work.

We’re talking about something you forgot to mention initially that needs to be added to the job later. Or maybe you weren’t sure if you’d feel comfortable with your painters or the painting process, but now you do, so you see if there’s any way a little bit more can be added to the job scope. Maybe you really want to add a guest room to the interior repaint, or you suddenly wish you’d talked about touching up the scuffed trim along the stairway.

A crew leader also might notice something that should be taken care of while they’re there. For example, a missing piece of trim to replace, or some wood rot along your eaves that should be addressed before it spreads.

What many homeowners don’t fully realize is just how many variables are involved in the residential painting process. If you’re considering painting your kitchen cabinets for example, we can’t provide a ballpark figure for an “average” kitchen. If we tried, we’d have to give you a HUGE range - not very helpful for you as you plan your home improvement project and budget.

The best course forward, sticking with the cabinet painting example, would be for us to send an estimator to see your space in person. We’d factor in the size of your kitchen, number of doors and drawers, current condition, material type, whether or not you have an island, type of finish you want, type of existing finish, and the list goes on… You get the idea.

If you follow home improvement trends and products at all, you’ve probably seen the super popular “paint and primer in one!” options. The appeal is strong: knock your project out quicker while skipping the need for that boring initial priming step. It’s way more fun to jump right to the snazzy new topcoat, right?

In some cases, these products do fit the bill, especially if it’s a good quality paint (we won’t name any names, but you get what you pay for).

They’re really only a viable option for the best-case scenario, though. For example, if you’re making an easy color transition on a wall that’s in great shape, like a darker paint over light.

As alluring as these paints can be, it’s important to remember two things:

Painting Case Study: Picking a Primer That Blocks Stains and Varnishes

Hold onto your hat. For this recent project we actually used four different primers, each for a strategic purpose.

When we began painting old, varnished baseboards for this particular client, we knew we’d need a high-bond primer that would stick to the surface. So, we applied a coat of Stix primer to build a strong foundation.

Unfortunately, Stix is NOT designed to block the bleed-through of stains and varnishes. This means that over time those base colors would seep back through. No good.

So, as a solution, we applied a second primer that delivers the kind of long-term “hide” that we want. Caulking and paint completed the transformation, and we could rest easy knowing it was done right and would last.

Using the Right Primer After Wallpaper Removal

Let’s move on to a different part of this same job.

Next, we needed to remove wallpaper, and after we did we found spots of surface black mold. Not all that uncommon, especially since this wallpaper was in a bathroom where there are naturally higher levels of moisture.

As a first step, we used a mold-killing primer to ensure that the mold would never grow back. After that, we needed to use a primer that would totally lock down the remnants of wall glue left behind to prevent possible bubbling (if you’re curious, we used Roman 99 primer).

We could then finish minor repairs and move on to the topcoat.

What’s the Takeaway?

First, we’d encourage you to not see primer as a necessary evil, or a step to be skimmed over or minimized. Painting is a lot of work, and it’s worth doing every stage correctly to yield the best result possible.

Secondly, remember that different primers are designed to solve unique problems. They’re an asset, whether you’re covering something as simple as a spackled nail hole, or you need to make sure no more black mold pops up in that downstairs bathroom.

Why Does My Room Still Smell Like Fresh Paint? An Interior Painting Mystery…

All the rooms were painted at the same time and with the same product, but one bedroom still smelled. Why?

Ready to put your thinking cap on? We recently helped a client who was dealing with lingering paint odor: a big problem when you’re looking for fresh style, not fumes. With our “No mess, no stress” painting philosophy, we take issues like this seriously and quickly sent one of our pros to do a deeper investigation.

Setting the scene: three bedrooms freshly painted

Last November we painted three bedrooms for a client, and all the paint came from the same 5-gallon bucket of Sherwin-Williams Cashmere in a flat finish. Everything went well. And, thanks to the paint being an interior acrylic latex, we knew that any paint odor would be minimal and dissipate quickly. Perfect for a wintertime paint job.

Fast forward to late December, just before the holidays.

Our client called and said that one of the bedrooms still smelled like fresh paint. With guests coming soon for Christmas, this was a big problem.

Cracking the case: how to get rid of that new paint smell

Our pro asked all the right questions, eliminating any possibility that the room had been treated differently by our team than the others, or that a different paint product was used. And that’s when the clue was dropped that blew the case wide open.

After the paint job was done, our client had shut the door to the bedroom in question since it was a guest space. It had remained virtually unused and untouched for over a month with no real air circulation or temperature variation.

As a test run, we suggested leaving the door open to facilitate a total air exchange. Within hours the paint smell was gone…

The takeaway?

Yes, painting indoors right through the winter is perfectly safe, especially thanks to the low-VOC interior paint options that have little-to-no odor. But some air circulation is still necessary to really aid in the dissipation of even trace amounts of odor.

Also, be sure you use the right type of paint. As we said, low-VOC acrylic latex is the right way to go. If you opted for an oil-based product, you’d be dealing with much stronger, longer-lasting fumes.

Every year, as the cold weather returns, homeowners are driven toward the indoor projects on their to-do list. Repairs, cleaning, maybe some light renovations… These are awesome ways to stay active and productive around the house when outdoor activities are more limited.

Few projects are as satisfying (and cost-effective) as applying a fresh coat of paint . But, it also raises a really important question: is it safe to paint indoors during the fall and winter, or should you wait until spring?

Do You Need To Worry About Paint Fumes?

In the not-so-distant past, interior paint was smelly stuff. Not exactly a technical description, but still true. Even after it dried, there was a heavy, lingering, new-paint smell that could last for days. That’s why a lot of home and business owners waited until spring and summer to finish their painting projects, when the warmer weather allowed them to throw open their windows and ventilate the space.

Good news: paint formulas today are evolving and improving at a rapid rate.

With more awareness of environmental considerations, manufacturers are also finding ways to deliver the same (or improved!) performance, but reduce the reliance on chemicals. This includes developing paint products with little to no odor.

Low-Odor Paint Products: Say Goodbye to VOCs!

We’ll skip the chemistry lesson, but suffice it to say that the stinky “new paint smell” is actually caused by Volatile Organic Compounds that dissipate as the paint cures.

There are numerous, high-quality paint options today that have extremely low VOC levels, meaning that the paint is basically odor-free. You may notice a slight smell during application, but it’s typically completely gone when the paint is dry (and that takes no time at all).

Old paint products were smelly and unhealthy to use in unventilated areas, but today’s low-VOC, low-odor formulas make interior painting completely safe year round.
